Zamagurie, a territory on Slovakia's NW border, is an area of specific features which determine region's economic development. A part of the territory is a national park (Pieniny), another part is agricultural land in collective ownership, further part in private one. The ecological study of this territory represents evaluation and mapping of the grassland vegetation and a proposal of their optimal management. Eleven types of meadow vegetation were mapped, their indicative qualities, nutritive value, honey-bearing and pharmacological potentials were evaluated and interpreted from the aspect of their ecological and socio-economic importance. The optimal proposition envisages to use the major part of the territory as an intensive grassland. The author proposes to maintain the part of the territory with a well-preserved traditional management structure and with a high biological, landscape and ecological value in its autochthonous state.
