Preliminary assessment of tailings as a horticultural plant growth medium
1990

Describes a series of experiments whereby 6 media compositions: tailings only; 2 ratios of tailings and waste rock; 2 ratios of tailings and manure; and a control of fine sandy loam, were used to grow lettuces and broad beans. Different fertilizer treatments were applied. Field rates of solid inorganic fertilizer were found to be inappropriate for this pot trial as excessive fertilizer led to high salinity and plant death. The addition of chicken manure to tailings gave yields not significantly different from the control soil but much greater than tailings alone
