Land rehabilitation in a simulated mine stripping operation was assessed on yellow-grey earth schist-derived soil at a proposed opencast gold-mine site near McCraes Flat, Otago, New Zealand. The objectives were to simulate a pasture rehabilitation programme and observe the effects of 3 alternative soil replacement techniques on pasture establishment, survival and production, including a comparison with oversown topdressed tussock and unimproved tussock control. Almost two years after the initial sowing there were no significant differences in pasture yield among cultivated and oversown treatments but a highly significant difference between these and the control
