Dehydration process of ethanol solution is essential whether the alcohol is for fuel or chemical use. The adsorption of water from liquid solutions containing 85-95% (V/V) ethanol onto starchy materials such as gabi, sweet potato, potato, cassava, rice and corn was studied. At 85% and 90% (V/V) ethanol solution, rice had the highest water adsorption ability, while corn registered high ability of 95% (V/V) ethanol solution. Based on this primary criteria data, the continuous process was designed for water adsorption of ethyl-alcohol solution in a fixed bed of ground corn particles. The effect of process conditions such as temperature, feed rate, ethanol concentration and starch particle size on the adsorption capacity of sorbent was studied. In the optimization of process conditions, absolute ethyl alcohol is obtained. The technology developed is already available for scaling up to the pilot scale process.
