Variability in sweet potato germplasm for food quality characteristics
1989
Collins, W.W. (North Carolina State Univ., Raleigh, North Carolina (USA))
Almost 300 sweet potato clones in a large germplasm collection were evaluated for five or seven food quality and production characteristics (dry matter, protein, carotene, sugar, starch, crude fiber and ascorbic acid). Forty five clones were evaluated in replicated test for food quality and production characteristics. There was a wide range of variability in all characters evaluated. Results show that particular food quality characters can be combined in different types of cultivars to meet many diverse consumer needs. In addition, production of dry matter and protein (kg/ha/day) in all clones was well above FAO reported levels.
