Tannin extracts from barks of tangal [Ceriops tagal (Perr.) C.B. Rob.] were obtained by using the six-stage countercurrent process with efficiency of 85.8%. Tannin content was 26.1%; tannin formaldehyde precipitates, 47.2%; tannin to nontannin ratio, 16:1. Tangal tannin formaldehyde (TTF) adhesive developed Type 2 bond (Water Resistant) quality in 3-ply, 7.8 mm x 300 mm x 300 mm white lauan plywood. Fortifying the TTF adhesive with 30... 40 percent phenol formaldehyde improved the glueline quality to Type 1 bond (Waterproof). Tannin analysis properties of tannin formaldehyde adhesives and body quality tests are discussed.
