In situ study of the root system as a water sink
1990
Tardieu, F. (INRA, Thiveral-Grignon (France). Laboratoire d'Agronomie)
A field study has been carried out for 4 years, in order to study the effect of the structure of ploughed layer on the root system and on the water uptake of maize. Four types of structure were reproduced in the ploughed layer of the experimental loamy field. Root systems have been characterized each year by root mapping on horizontal and vertical planes; soil moisture and leaf stomatal conductance have been monitored during 6 weeks around silking. Maize root system had reproductible reactions, which concern both the ploughed and non-tilled layers. While root depth did not vary between treatments, the spatial arrangement of roots was more irregular when obstacles to penetration were the more frequent
