The outbreeding perennial grasses and the inbreeding annual oat crop exemplify the contrasts in objectives and methodologies in quality improvement. It has been shown that in the outbreeding grasses high levels of genetic variability for many quality traits are maintained even within existing varieties. By selecting within varieties with relatively good agronomic performance it is thus possible to concentrate on improving one or a few characters
