Effects of tillage on a corn-cotton sequence in Cote d'Ivoire
1989
Chopart, J.L.
The following tillage practices were studied in corn-cotton cropping sequences: 1. Manual tillage with mulching. 2. Direct mechanical sowing with mulching 3. Ploughing prior to corn and cotton. 4. Ploughing prior to sowing of corn followed by direct drilling of cotton. Comparisons were made on water-use efficiency, soil physical properties and root development, production costs and yields. The results suggested the need for ploughing prior to sowing of corn despite the added production costs. Direct drilling of cotton could replace ploughing when a cotton crop followed a corn crop. A system that combined ploughing prior to sowing of corn in the first rainy season and direct drilling of cotton in the second was a profitable alternative to the practice of two ploughings a year
