The recognition that some solanaceous plants, susceptible to bacterial wilt can develop a resistance against the pathogen on sea shell soils led to the hypothesis that the mechanism behind is of physiological origin. To elucidate this, comparative studies on nutrient uptake, growth and growth vigor of the tomato plants were made on sandy and sea shell soils. From these experiments the soil-environment not only seemed to have a marked influence on the nutrient uptake, but also plant development and vigor were affected. The resistance therefore, seems to be the result of plant physiological changes that occur in the host plant.
