General information on the natural distribution of bacterial wilt of tomato in the coastal area of the country is given. In contrast to the acid sandy and clay soils, tomato and other solanaceous crops like sweet pepper and eggplant, showed resistance to the wilt disease, when grown in the alkaline fluvio-marine soils of the ridge landscape. The mechanism giving rise to this phenomenon is not as yet clear and remains to be studied. Surveys on the wilt disease of tomato were carried out and the pathogens isolated from infected plants were identified.
