The concept of the liaison between the generation of technology and its transference operates in a great number of Latin American countries and can be considered as a continuum of identifiable stages viz. knowledge, generation, validation, diffusion, adoption and evaluation of the degree of impact produced. The extension services play a primary role in these steps. The style and type of organization for research and transfer of technology has been conditioned largely by variable government policies which have to be responsive to each country's needs. Notwithstanding immense obstacles to be overcome, there is considerable scope for regional co-operation in research and transfer of technology, particularly between countries with similar ecological conditions. The concept of the farm as an integrated operational unit is essential to the successful transfer of technology to its operations.
