This paper explains the suitability of pigeon pea (Cajanus cajan) for diverse cropping systems. Pigeon pea production for agricultural diversification in Trinidad and Tobago is recommended because of its contribution towards foreign exchange savings, food security and providing linkages to processing and livestock. Considering its importance to the national economy, the policy and infrastructural measures of serious consideration for dry pigeon pea production are outlined: 1) Provision of processing facilities. 2) Continuation of efforts to improve the mechanized system of dry pigeon pea cultivation. 3) Institution of production incentives on par with other crops. 4) Protection of producers from unfair competition. 5) Extension and information dissemination at the producer's and consumer's level.
