Treatment of soybean straw with ammonia can improve the rate and the extent of straw digestibility. This can have the two-fold effect of increasing the energy concentration of the material and also of increasing its potential intake ammonia. Treated straw can be used satisfactorily as the sole source of roughage in diets for dairy heifers over wintering and fattening beef, and in dairy cows. Animal responses to treated straw are improved by supplementation with non-protein nitrogen to facilitate rumen microbial digestion, and it is for this reason that ammonia treatment may be more appropriate than treatment with other chemicals.
