The effect of air pollutions on the soil and the culture of sugar beet in the Zajecar region [Yugoslavia]

The investigated sugar beet variety (Beta vulgaris) has shown significant differences in morphological characteristics in relation to the distance from the source of contamination. The results show higher water content in leaves than in roots. At the same time plants grown nearest to the factory have lower water content in leaves and roots than plants grown far from the factory. Osmotic pressure of the cell sap is lowest in plants grown nearest to the source of contamination and it increases with the increase of distance from the factory. The sugar content is higher in the control plants than in those grown nearest to the source of contamination. Air contaminants have negative effect upon the total yield of sugar beet. Quantities of Zn, Cu and Pb are also different in plant organs in relation to the distance from the source of contamination. Concentrations of Zn, Cu and Pb in the soil is highest on plots nearest to the factory.
