Effects of wheat bran and mustard oil on tubificids production, culture system [Bangladesh]

Tubificids (Annelida, Aquatic Oligochaeta, Tubificidae) are commercially important nutritious live food for fishes and crustaceans, specially, for carnivorous and aquarium fishes. An experiment was conducted for a period of 60 days to develop a suitable media for tubificids culture. The worms (initially introduced: 0.5 mg/cm2; mean live weight of an individual 2.69 1.25 mg) showed significantly higher production (419 mg or 453 individual/cm2 in 60 days) in a culvert system (160 x 25 x 10 cm(2)) under running water (1.14 0.35 1/min.), on a substrate containing 35% wheat bran, 20% mustard oil cake, 25% cowdung and 20% fine sand. Media were added at the rate of 25 mg/cm(2) once in 10 days. New offspring appeared after 20 days of experiment and 2.76 g (1.25 g wheat bran, 0.71 g mustard oil cake and 0.80 g cowdung) raw materials produced 1.0 g of worms in a temperature, DO and pH range of 28.73 1.36 deg. C, 3.68 0.7 ppm and 7.17 0.19 respectively.
