Varietal improvement of tomato through induction and use of mutants [in Bangladesh]

A zonal yield trial with two winter tomato hybrids, A-2 and E-6 along with their mother varieties "Oxheart" and "Anobik" was conducted in 3 locations. The hybrid, A-2 produced significantly higher fruit-yield at all the locations. The hybrid, E-6 although not high yielding as A-2 but it has good potential because of its earlier maturity period. In case of summer tomato, F(2) population obtained from crosses between the hybrid, D-10 and summer variety (CL-143-0-10-3) was grown in the field. A wide range of variation in respect of fruit types was observed. Fifteen hybrid lines were selected on the basis of higher number of fruits/plant and bigger fruit size with more fleshy areas.
