An experiment was undertaken at the Poultry Farm, Agronomy Department, Univ. of Concepcion, Chillan, Chile, during a period of 20 weeks between March and August of 1989. The purpose of the trial was to evaluate the naked oat (Avena nuda) as subsitute of corn in rations for laying hens during the starting and growing stage, considering productive parameters. Three hundred Harco Sex Link chicken one day old were assigned at random to five dietary treatments with four replicates of fifteen hens each. The levels of naked oat in the diet were: 0, 25, 50, 75 and 100% corresponding to treatment, no statistical differences were obtained (P 0,05). The feed conversion varied between 5,1 and 5,5 kg/kg, the sexual maturity was not affected by the level of the naked oat inclusion in the rations. With regard to the feed cost, the inclusion of naked oat in the diet for starting and growing poultry was more economic. According to the results, the naked oat may be used for laying hens in the growing stage replacing corn up to a 100% without affecting feed consumption, increase body weight, feed conversion and sexual maturity
