The effect of some factors on somatic cell counts in milk was evaluated in 3978 cows. The geometric mean of the average somatic cell counts was 369 thous./ml. The effects of the following factors on somatic cell counts were found to be significant: the effect of calendar month was higher in summer months (494 thous./ml); the effect of lactation stage was higher in the first month (537 thous./ml) and at the end of lactation; the order of lactaion: the lowest counts in the first lactation (248 thous./ml), an increase in successive lactations; genotype of dairy cow and sire. The results indicate that the increases in somatic cell counts occurred parallelly with the incidence of functional disorders of reproductive organs and diarrhoeas in dairy cows. A negative correlation was calculated between the somatic cell counts and lactose content (r=-0.25).
