A study of the health problems of a herd of beef cattle raised in the coastal savanna zone of Ghana

Cattle maintained at the Agricultural Research Staton (ARS) Kpong Farm covering a period of nine years (1980-1988) were studied to ascertain the extent and nature of the distribution of diseases in terms of age, sex, management practices and seasons of the year. From the post-mortem records, most deaths occurred durng the wet season with no significant differences in mortality rates between the sexes and the different age groups of the animals. Most deaths were due mainly to management associated problems. Starvation was the most important cause of death with an incidence figure of 14.78.
