A description of the Moblissa dairy project

The performance of two dairy enterprises located at Moblina, Guyana are discussed. The first is a large public sector dairy farm which has 284 hectares of improved pasture and 202 ha of native, unimproved pasture. Artificial insemination is used together with a natural service by "back up" bulls. Calves are reared artificially and weaned at 12 weeks old. Male calves are sold at a weight of 118 hp and replacement heifers are selected on conformation and genetic background. The second enterprise is a small privately owned dairy farm which is an area of 20.25 hectares, 14 ha of which is under dense tropical rain forests. The farm is unmechanised and cows are bred by natural service. Calves are reared naturally and allowed to suckle their dams until weaning i.e. drying off. Weaners are grazed on pasture with limited supplementation. Lactating cows are milked by hand once a day. Adult cows and weaners are grazed on 5.4 ha of Brachiaria humidicola, which is fertilized once a year. The main constraints are limited transport facilities, especially for supplies, and irregular concentrate feed supply.
