Experiments with laser assisted land development technology on the Clarendon plains of Jamaica
1991
White, L.H. (Sugar Industry Research Institute, Mandeville (Jamaica))
Land Development or Land Forming by grading and reblocking for improved water management has been applied to some sections of the Jamaican Sugar Industry since 1960. Laser controlled land grading and computerised field data processing technology have been applied since 1988, resulting in the grading of 283 hectares within the Clarendon plains region. Although productivity has been greatly influenced by subsequent cultural practices such as the quantity and quality of applied irrigation water, weed control measures, varieties used and drainage, average annual plant cane yield increased from 41.7 tonnes/ha to 77.8 tonnes/ha.
