Banana leafspot (sigatoka) control programme in the Windward Islands
1986
Lawrence, J.S.
Sigatoka (Mycosphaerella musicola) but not black sigatoka (M. fijiensis var. difformis) occurs in Windward islands. The research report explains that the rugged terrain and the large number of small holdings are major features influencing efforts to control leaf spot (sigatoka) disease. A systemic fungicide-oil spray programme is employed in which applications of benzimidazole formulations are alternated with tridemorph. A disease monitoring system is operated on all islands through a network of reference points in which leafspot levels are assessed fortnightly. This system enables effective control to be obtained with an island average of 8-9 aerial application/year. Additional alternative fungicides for rotation with benzimidazoles are being tested, amongst which Tilt and Punch have shown promise.
