Rapid fluid-bed drying of paddy rice in the humid tropics

This paper outlines the benefits of using the fluid-bed process to dry high moisture content [MC] paddy rapidly down to about 18% MC. Laboratory experiments are described which shows that paddy can be dried safely from 24-18% m.c. over an inlet air temperature range from 40 to 90 deg C. Computer simulations are performed on the CSIRO mobile fluid-bed drier which indicate the advantages in drying performance and cost of using higher inlet air temperature, lower air velocities, and deeper grain beds. The deleterious effect of grain dispersion is shown to be small for this drier. Fluid-bed drying is shown to have several advantages over other forms of drying at competitive costs. It can also be rapidly adopted for cooling, cleaning, conditioning, and disinfesting paddy and other grains.
