Effect of formulation, method of application and water overflowing on butachlor performance

Experiments were conducted at the International Rice Research Institute [Los Banos, Laguna , Philippines] during the 1989 wet season to determine if herbicide formulation and method of application had any effect on herbicide performance when water overflowed from a treated field 2 hr after herbicide application. The weed control efficacy of butachlor applied as a granule was significantly reduced when water overflowed. Soil incorporation of the herbicide prevented herbicide movement in the overflowing water. The majority of the applied herbicide (91.2-93.2%) remained suspended in floodwater 1 hr after overflowing (3 hr after application). This explains why weed control was obtained in untreated plots into which water from butachlor-treated plots overflowed.
