Reduction of silica content of two rice varieties by hydroponics (0-400 ppm SiO2) increased leaf openness and decreased stem bending hardness. It also decreased hull weight. The number of silica cells on the surface of leaf blades and leaf sheaths was similarly decreased. Reduction of silica content to less than 5% seemed to increase in vitro dry matter digestibility of rice straw but it had no effect on in vitro organic matter digestibility. Reduction of silica content had no significant effect on rice hull digestibilities. Thus, silica is probably not a major factor that determines in vitro organic matter digestibility of rice straw and rice hull.
