Fertlized cotton ovules cultured in the presence of fluridone, an inhibitor of abscisic acid biosynthesis responded, with the marked increase in the activities of phosphoenolpyruvate carboxylase, NAD-malate dehydrogenase, glutamate-oxaloacetate transaminase and NADP-malic enzyme. A concomitant increase in fibre growth capacity of the ovules was also observed. Abscisic acid lowered the ability of ovules for non-photosynthetic C4 metabolism by causing enzyme inhibition and consequently the fibre growth was also retarded
