Z-type beets rich in sugar content are characterized by smaller cell size as compared with highly yielding E-types. Hence, measuring the cell size of seedling-root parenchyme, as well as stomata and pollen-grain size, makes possible the preliminary selection of breeding materials. The content of dry matter in the petiole can also be used for identification of Z-type beets. The results obtained suggest that the preliminary selection based on the above criteria would possibly ensure a reduction of time and costs in developing new cultivars and in preserving their qualities
