[Farmers' practices for wheat production in the cotton zone of Pakistan's Punjab]
1988
Akhtar, M.R. | Iqbal, M. | Azeem, M. (Pakistan Agricultural Research Council, Islamabad (Pakistan))
A survey was undertaken at wheat harvest time in the Multan district which is one of the leading cotton-growing areas in the Punjab in 1985 to delineate major factors limiting wheat productivity in cotton-wheat areas, explore the costs and returns of the farm-level low- and high-yielding wheat technology in cotton-wheat areas, and draw policy inferences for agricultural research and extension. The major factors limiting wheat productivity in the cotton areas were the late planting of wheat after cotton, the use of rust-susceptible varieties, inefficient use of fertilizer and irrigation water, broadleaf weeds, the high harvesting costs, and the income from wheat which does not give reasonable returns on capital to the farmers
