Response of wetland rice to nitrogen fertilizer in relation to water management during application
1987
Keisers, J.T. (Agricultural Experiment Station, Nickerie (Suriname). Rice Dept.)
Field experiments were conducted to study the response of the wetland rice variety, SML Eloni, to top-dressed nitrogen fertilizer (urea) applied into floodwater or to a drained soil surface. Water management during application affected the degree of algal growth in the floodwater and the floodwater pH. None of the measured crop variables was significantly influenced by water management, suggesting that nitrogen loss through denitrification or ammonia volatilization was not greatly influenced by water management. Nitrogen rate affected number of days from seeding to heading, plant height, dry matter production, harvest index, and grain yield. Grain yield increased with increasing nitrogen rates to 150 or 200 kg N per ha.
