In the course of 1986 and 1987, the characteristics of the annual growth of the shrub, winter buds during the period of ecological repose and their growth and development in the annual cycle were studied in the strawberry varieties Zenga zengana and Gorela grown in a greenhouse and in the field. The following conclusions were drawn. In the period of ecological repose, the annual growths of the shrub have autumnal leaves which overwinter on them, compound and vegetative buds and adventitious roots which take root during the same season in which they developed. The perennial growth of the strawberry shrub is maintained by the permanent rooting of the newly developed annual growths. The old growths gradually lose their vital functions which classifies the perennial stalk of the strawberry into the category of upright rhizome. The strawberry varieties Zenga zengana, Gorela and Faveta planted on plastic were analyzed for the growth and development of winter buds in the winters of 1987/88 and 1988/89 and for yield performances after the end of the first and the second year of cultivation. The analyses showed that the yielding potential dropped in the second year in all three varieties, as demonstrated by decreases in the number of newly developed annual growths and in the number of vegetative and generative buds differentiated on the newly developed growths.
