The investigation on a certain number of purebred sows and crosses and on a number of litters was carried out in order to study certain reproductive characteristics. Breeding of piglets in the suckling period up to 28 and 30 days is the best indicator of the value of a sow in several successive farrowings. Death of piglets in this period and causes of losses were studied in order to determine the most efficient measures of zootechnical protection so that these losses could be reduced to a reasonable degree. On the basis of some world standards, death of piglets in a litter up to 28 days of age should not exceed the rate of 12-14% in relation to the number of liveborn piglets. Deaths of piglets are especially high in the first week after farrowing (7 days) while later, they significantly decrease. Genetic factor is certainly the most important but other factors, (technology, nutrition and health) have a great effect, as well.
