Annual Report 1980-1981 [West Indies Sugar Cane Breeding Station]
1981
Details of research and other activities of the sugar cane breeding station during the period 1980-1981 are presented. In the genetic-base broadening programme, a wider range of saccharum spontaneum forms was successfully used following flowering time manipulation. Incidence and spread of smut, rust and yellow spot disease have been discussed. Sugar cane thrips, a pest new to the region, which appeared in August 1980 following a hurricane is reported to be causing severe damage to the crop. A serious start has been made with the isolation and culture invitro of excised buds with a view to establishing a pre-export protocol acceptable to import countries.
