A survey on Narikeli FSR site examined the existing poultry production and utilization systems. Sixty three percent had sole chicken farming and 37% had mixed farming with chicken, duck and pigeon. Thirty three percent farmer had exotic breed and the rest had local. Average number of chicken, duck and pigeon was 11.4, 0.6 and 4.7 per family, respectively. Marginal and small farmer had more number of pigeon. Chicken and ducks scavenged for food around the homestead. Exotic breed were reared on deep littered system and were fed rice bran, wheat bran, snails etc. Farmers got 72% chicken egg hatchability in traditional system. Chicken took 79 days to broodchick before laying. Contagious disease leads the poultry rearing to risk. Mortality of chicken was 84%. Forty nine percent of farmers vaccinated poultry. Average egg production was 121/ farm/ year. Meat was the dominant output from poultry. Each farmer produced 33 poultry per year, out of which 58% was sold and 27% was consumed. For smaller farmer, chicken and pigeon have a higher potential of increasing cash income rather than duck. The extra income from poultry had directly benefited the smaller farmer and women for purchasing daily essentials and crop production inputs.
