Nest counts versus trapping in ant surveys: influence on diversity

The relationship between number of species (S) and abundance (N) was examined for 211 species of ants from 34 published faunistic surveys in Europe, North America and Japan. Trapping or nest counts conducted at the same locality usually provided the same number of, although not identical, ant species. However, trapping involved 10 to 100-times more individuals than did nest counts. Also, nest counts yielded higher species numbers with increasing sampling effort. Indices for species and habitat diversity based on different models for the S : N -relationship varied accordingly depending on methodology.
