Effect of growing area on the harvest index in several sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.) genotypes.

In a model experiment with a replications, carried out on sandy adobe soil, measurements were made on the biological yield, achene yield and harvest index of the 2 hybrids with high oil contents (H-13, NS-H-26), one pollen pollinated variety with a high oil content (GK 70) and one open pollinated variety grown as bird food (Iregi szurke csikos). Depending on the environmental variance, the harvest index in the genotypes tested exhibited values ranging between 0.321 and 0.524. The environmental variance, particularly the year effect, had a decisive influence on the harvest index. The value of the harvest index showed a significant correlation with achene yield, but not with biological yield. It follows from the nature of the experiment that the results are of theoretical value and cannot be extrapolated directly for use in practical production.
