Some notes on the characteristic of dipterocarp seeds

The greatest problem of Indonesian Timber Estate development is collecting seeds because of the irregular fruiting season of Dipterocarpaceae. Some researches indicated that in East Kalimantan, Shorea ovalis and S. smithiana fruiting is once in three years. At the Forest Research and Development Centers Experimental Garden, the fruiting period of Shorea species is usually from December to March. The maturity and size of seeds affect the percent germination of mature seeds which is 96.0 percent for S. stenoptera. The percent germination of Anisoptera costata with diameter size between 1.55 - 2.00 cm is 90.0 percent while those whose diameter is less than 1.24 cm is 13.3 percent. As a recall citrant seed, S. pinanga can be stored in wet charcoal. After 12 days, the percent germination is 74.49 percent. If it is stored in a box covered with paraffin the percent germination is 62.0 percent after 28 days. Among the insects which are pests of dipterocarp fruits are Nenophyes shorea, Alcidodes dipterocarpi and Pyrahidae.
