A preliminary study of the farming system of swamp buffaloes in South Kalimantan was conducted. Forty seven farmers from six villages in Kecamatan Danau Panggang, Kabupaten Hulu Sungai Utara were interviewed. And blood samples from buffaloes were also collected and examined to identify blood parasites. The results of the study show that most of the small holders of the swamp buffaloes are indigenous local people and generally they take possession of the buffaloes from their parental inheritance. The management system is extensive traditional and property of swamp buffaloes still semi wild. Farmers do not prepare food (forages and concentrates) for their animals, but they have to prepare "kalang" as a resting place for the buffaloes in the night during the rainy season. A tendency of the farmers is to sell the buffaloes suffering from disease and rarely to treat sick animals.
