Phytoplankton primary production and the affecting ecological factors in the shatt Al-Basrah canal

Primary production of phytoplankton was studied in the shatt Al-Basrah canal. Samples were collected bimonthly during the period from 1987-1988. Three stations along the canal were selected to study the physical and chemical features of the water, species composition and cell counts of phytoplankton, chlorophyll content and primary productivity. A total of 89 species of phytoplankton belonging to 48 genera were indentified. Diatomees were the most important phytoplaktons, constituted of 69 species belonging to 30 genera
