A new rice cultivar "Higonohana" was bred from pedigrees of the cross ("Minaminishiki"//"Miyakei 902", "Nishihikari"/"Koganemasari") at the Miyazaki Agricultural Experiment Station. This cross was made in 1976. F1 and F2 of the progeny were generated in a green house for one year. F3 individuals were initially selected in the field. F4 panicle lines were selected in the field again. The strains after F5 were repeatedly selected using the pedigree method. The pedigree was registered in the official list of rice cultivars as "Norin No.298" by the Ministry of Agriculture, forestry and Fisheries in 1989, and has been recommended in Kumamoto prefecture since 1989. "Higonohana" belongs to the medium late maturity group of non-glutinous cultivars. The culm length is similar to "Minaminishiki", and the panicle number is somewhat higher. "Higonohana" belongs to the rather short stature and panicle number type. It has highly strong lodging resistance and has slow leaf senescence. It also has rather strong resistance to panicle blast disease, and has moderate resistance to bacterial leaf blight disease. The yield of "Higonohana" is rather lower than those of "Minaminishiki". It produces very good quality, delicious grains. It can be predicted that "Higonohana" will grow well in warmer regions
