The performance of oil palm clones in a systematic spacing trial was examined. There were large differences of clones in the planting density giving maximum yield. Some of this variation resulted from differences in leaf area, and the differences in optimal leaf area index were less than in density, but there also appeared to be differences between clones in light interception and in photosynthetic conversion coefficient. For all clones, vegetative dry matter production per palm decreased with increasing planting density, but mean leaf area was little affected
