Yield potential of planting material and reassessment of oil palm breeding program in Indonesia

Oil palm breeding programs in Indonesia aim to provide high yielding planting materials. Thanks to dura delia material and imported African tenera i.e. SP-540, much genetic progress has been achieved in the past by applying simple mass and family selection. Realising the superiority of the DxP hybrid, RRS and FIPS methods, modified as necessary were adopted from the seventies. For the present oil yield potential is about 5.0-6.5 tons/ha/year. Actual yield reported in the country is still slightly lower compared to the yield potential. Yield results obtained in progeny trials promise planting material with better prospects. In the second cycle of RRS, which will be completed in 1995, oil yield is anticipated to increase significantly. Cloning the best of the best progenies, which also show transgressive segregation, will produce elite clones with an oil potential exceeding 8.t tons/ha/year and even 9 tons/ha/year. Cloning strategies should be incorporated promptly to current oil palm breeding programs, without any principal changes to the breeding scheme
