On-farm variety trials

Five improved varieties were tested in an upland open field and three under-coconut areas of two barangays [villages] in the province of Albay [Philippines]. These were UPL-SP1, UPL-SP5, VSP1, and VSP6. Seventy-five days was used as the check variety. The trials were affected by drought during the period January to May 1992. Test varieties showed a high variability in yield but outyielded the check. UPI-SP1 ranked highest in terms of yield (7.8 t/ha) and number of marketable roots. A very high number of messing hills was noted in Palanog. Only 23% of the harvested roots was marketed; 48.3% of the roots was used for livestock; and the rest for home consumption.
