A (15) lines x (3) tester material was studied for six morpho-physiological characters and two grain characters under irrigated condition. Leaf area, panicle length and harvest index exhibited prepondence of non-additive gene action whereas all the remaining characters revealed presence of both additive and non-additive gene action. Variability in morpho-physiological characters was influenced by differences among CMS female lines whereas in grain characters it was due to male line differences. Generally parents with high GCA [general combining ability] effects for grain yield were also desirable general combiners for panicle length, root length and root dry weight. The GCA for narrower leaf angle appeared to be associated with that for grain yield. Barring few, crosses showing high SCA [specific combining ability] effects involved Low x Low general combiners for leaf angle, Low x Low, Low x High or Average x High for grain yield, High x Low and High x High for leaf area and panicle length, Low x Average, Average x Average and Low x High for all the three root characters and Average x Low for harvest index. The mode of genetic interaction varied from character to character ranging from epistatic to dominant type of gene action. Narrow leaf angle and panicle length appeared to be the competent characters of grain yield.
