To determine the causes of Striga hermonthica infestation, 219 fields planted with sorghum, millet and maize were investigated in 1988 in Ghana and Togo. 27 (%) of all planting holes were infected by S. hermonthica. The infestation by Striga depends on local population density. 0.1 (%) of the planting holes were infested if the population density of the area is 1-10 inhabitants/km2. The infestation increases up to 40 (%) if the population density is more than 50 inhabitants/km2. The infestation is about 30 (%) on sites with soils which are characterized by a low moisture, a high gravel or a low organic matter content. The infestation decreases with improving soil conditions
