Achievements and prospects of triticale in Italy

After Mizar and Rigel, ENEA's first triticale varieties now grown in Italy on almost 20,000 hectares, new varieties have been released and are cultivated. Neither the yield nor the adaptability potential seems to constitute limiting factors for triticale to spread further in our country. Instead the crop has to face internal marketing trends which are essentially dictated by traditional cereals such as bread wheat and barley. Based on present prices, triticale is profitable only when it yields 10 percent more than bread wheat and 35 percent more than durum wheat. The silage utilization is the most profitable
