A field experiment was conducted in Northern Syria in 1989-1990, to investigate the effect of ammonium fertilizer, in combination with nitrification inhibitors, on Orobanche crenata infestation in faba bean. Ammonium sulphate (0, 14 or 18 kg N/ha) was applied in combination with either N serve (0, 1.3 or 2.6 1/ha) or Didin (0, 10, or 20 kg/ha). The compounds were sprayed, either once or twice, immediately followed by a 2 mm irrigation. Soil samples were taken during the first 2 months of the experiments. At harvest time the emerged Orobanche shoots were counted. The application of ammonium sulphate resulted in a reduction of the number of emerged Orobanche shoots at harvest time by 21-34 (%) (one of application of 28 kg N/ha) and 34-46 (%) (two applications of 28 kg N/ha). From soil samples it appeared that the applied ammonium did not penetrate beyond a depth of 5 cm in the first 11 days. both nitrification inhibitors were to a certain extent effective in maintaining a higher ammonium content in the soil. N-serve itself had no effect on parasite number, but in combination with ammonium sulphate, it tended to diminish the beneficial effect of ammonium sulphate. N-serve also had an adverse on the root system of the crop and it was judged unsuitable for the use in Orobanche control. Addition of Didin had no significant effect on Orobanche infestation. However, since the lower number of Orobanche shoots was found in the treatment, where 20 kg N/ha ammonium sulphate was applied twice in combination with Didin
