Production situation and demand for groundnuts of processing factories

There are more than 10 factories in Thailand which boil and dry groundnuts. The demand for groundnuts of these factories totalled about 20,000 tons (dry pods equivalent) per year. These factories had not been running at full capacity because of the unavailability of raw materials at certain periods of the year. Most of these factories had to depend on raw materials from production areas far away from the factories. Most factories prefer 2-seeded pods with clear pod reticulation. The Tainan 9 variety, with smooth pods, is needed only by those factories which also do the shelling. All factories expressed their demand for promotion of groundnut production in the nearby areas and also to have year round supply of the raw materials. Total production was about 10,000 tons of oil (45,000 tons of dry pods) per year. Production was expected to decrease in 1984 and 1985 due to difficulty in selling groundnut cake (as a result of the competition of soybean cake), variation in price of groundnuts and unavailability of the raw materials at certain period of the year, the demand for oil from other crops (as the factories also produce oil from other crops) and the comparatively low price for groundnut oil. These factories use low quality seeds for oil extraction. Their production depends largely on the groundnut compilers in Bangkok who determine the price and quantity of groundnuts to feed in these factories.
