A study to establish the cause and extent of tree seedling mortality in forest nurseries and the purpose / use for which the farmer grows the trees and thus advise on their proper management. A total of 644 farmers were sampled, out of these 432 planted seedlings and 212 did direct sowing. 22 different species of trees were planted namely Eucalyptus sp, Dovyalis kaffra, Cupressus lusitanica, Gliricidia sepium etc for several uses namely as; poles, fruits, fuelwood, hedges, ornamentals, agroforestry, timber, windbreaks etc. Although Eucalyptus sp was the most popular species, Gliricidia sepium had the highest seedling survival percentage, followed by Dovyalis kaffra, Calliandra, Maesopsis eminii, Ficus sp and Callistema citrious had the lowest seedling survival percentage. The causes of seedling mortality ranged from forest fires, weeds, poor soil, drought and insect pests.
