Although 1992, in Yugoslavia was not a favourable year for the development of weeds and plant diseases due to the drought, the lack of pesticides for their control caused significant losses on some crops. As regards sugar beet, many crops were infested with weeds to a large extent in 1992 which was the result of the lack of herbicides and labour. Considerable losses were also the results of leaf spots and the lack of fungicides, partly due to inadequate time of crop treatment. Damages would have been far more serious if the conditions for the development of the disease were more favourable at the end of summer and the beginning of autumn. Since there are no favourable information of the import of pesticides in 1993, sugar beet producers have to be prepared for alternative methods of crop protection. The aim of this report is to point out the modern tendencies in sugar beet protection and to stress the possibility of cultivating this crop in the condition of limited application of pesticides. The report also provides data of the forecasting service in Vojvodina (Yugoslavia).
